NOTES ON ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE (ESD) PROTECTION.
As electronic circuits become smaller, they also become more susceptible to
electrostatic discharge (ESD.) An example of ESD is the shock you get
when you touch a metal object after walking
across a carpet on a cold dry day. Some electrostatic discharge
is too weak to feel, yet strong enough to damage an electronic device.
Your body can emit an electrostatic discharge just by coming close to
something, without actually touching it.
The devilish thing about electrostatic discharge is that it often causes
INTERMITTENT problems. In electronics, these can be the toughest ones to
trouble-shoot and repair.
This is why the european union included requirements for
electrostatic discharge protection when they wrote their equivalent of our FCC
rules, (Title 47 of the United States Code of Federal Regulations, Part 15.)
The suppliers on this page offer devices that
can help you design some electrostatic discharge protection
into your product. You may need this if
your product must meet the requirements of Electromagnetic Environmental
Effects or E3 or of European community directive 89-336-EEC for the "CE Mark."
