NOTES ON FERRITE DEVICES AND TOROIDS in electromagnetic compatibility design.
Ferrite devices are a handy way to add inductance to a circuit,
thereby acting as a type of low-pass filter. Some come in two halves,
so they can be placed around a wire or a cable without unsoldering
or disconnecting anything. They are a handy way to experiment when trying to
suppress certain types of emissions. They can also be used to make
simple baluns for antennas.
Ferrite-beads also come in extremely small sizes, suitable
for mounting on printed circuit boards. Toroids are doughnut-shaped
ferrites, suitable for making filters, inductors, baluns and transformers.
The suppliers listed on this page carry a wide variety of ferrite materials,
including toroids of many different sizes. They can be used to
solve a variety of electromagnetic interference (EMI) problems.
